A Study in Tone and Structure
This image was shaped by a shift in attention—from color to structure. Working along the Maine coast, I found the scene defined not by seasonal color, but by tone, texture, and the physical weight of the landscape itself.
Layered rock, seaweed, and water resolve into a composition built on contrast and density. The relationships are less about subject than about how form emerges through light.
After Doré
The reference came later. The tonal depth and engraved quality of the scene recalled the work of Gustave Doré—particularly his treatment of landscape as something both dramatic and structured.
What appears photographic begins to take on a different character—less descriptive, more interpretive, shaped by density, shadow, and repetition.
