This photograph was made during a late-October assignment in West Virginia, at the height of autumn color. After a day spent photographing industrial sites framed by vivid foliage, I pulled off the road hoping to capture a wide landscape before heading back.
Before setting up the camera, I looked down.
A Study in Color and Density
Beneath my feet was this quiet arrangement—reds, golds, ochres, and browns layered into a richly textured surface. The overcast light softened the scene, allowing subtle variations in color and detail to emerge without harsh shadow.
Rather than a sweeping view, the photograph became a study in the density and complexity of autumn itself.
Sometimes the smallest scenes hold the most color.
