A Quiet Cowboy and Horse Portrait
His name is Josh, and while I regret not knowing the name of his “best friend,” the bond between them is unmistakable—even to someone like me who isn’t a rider.
We were in the stables, and I was there to make a portrait of Josh. The initial frames followed the usual rhythm: half-lengths, close-ups, him turning this way and that, leaning against a post. But just out of frame to his left was his horse, who had clearly decided it was time to be part of the moment.
At first, the horse nosed into the foreground, slightly out of focus. Then, curiosity took over, and he moved closer. And then…
This happened.
A simple, unscripted gesture. A private moment between a cowboy and his horse—tender, intimate, and completely real. I couldn’t have staged it better if I tried. The positioning, the body language, and Josh’s hidden eyes all come together to say something about trust, connection, and the unspoken language between human and animal.
It’s images like this that remind me why I do what I do. A cowboy and horse portrait that hits the amrk for me.
