Board of Trade II-Chicago
A Horizontal Perspective on a Chicago Icon
This is the second of two photographs I made of the Chicago Board of Trade Building during a walking tour of the city with a simple plastic Holga camera, loaded with medium-format black and white film.
Like its companion image, Board of Trade I, the negative was finished in warm sepia tones—a treatment that echoes both the building’s Art Deco heritage and the vintage character of the Holga itself.
Late Light and Sepia Shadows
Where the first image climbs vertically toward the sky, this photograph steps back and allows the building to stretch across the frame. Late afternoon light slips around the corner from the west, catching the façade and outlining its geometry against the darker canyon of surrounding buildings.
Architecture with Quiet Authority
Completed in 1930 and designed by Holabird & Root, the 605-foot tower remains one of Chicago’s defining Art Deco landmarks. At its summit stands the statue of Ceres, Roman goddess of agriculture—an enduring reference to the building’s origins as the center of American commodities trading.
