Shortly after arriving on the island of Islay, I noticed a weathered wooden boat resting in dry dock near the harbor at Port Askaig.
What drew me in was the combination of color, texture, and line. Thick ropes draped across the bow, worn paint revealed layers of rust and wood beneath, and the angled structure of the boat created a strong graphic composition.
The scene felt both maritime and almost abstract — a study of working materials shaped by years of sea air and use.
The photograph was made on Kodachrome, whose rich color palette rendered the warm tones of the wood and the cooler maritime blues with remarkable depth.
