Boat Bow, Islay

Boat Bow, Islay

I had come to Islay (pr: eye-luh), the Scottish island that is the southernmost one in the Inner Hebrides, on a self-promotion assignment.

I had contacted the Lagavulin Distillery, an incredible smoky single malt Scotch whiskey that I love, and through their home office was afforded complete access to the facility. I wanted to promote myself as something other than an oil and gas photographer, since that was so much of our assignment work here in Houston.

After flying to Glasgow, I drove to Tarbert and spent the night before driving to Kennacraig and boarding the ferry to Port Askaig the next morning.

As I drove off the ferry at the landing  I stepped out of the car for a few minutes to “see what I could see,” and was immediately taken by the the front of this boat, sitting in dry dock in the boat yard. The colors, the textures of the old wood, the rope lines offset from the tilt of the bow, well, I grabbed the camera and exposed some Kodachrome before heading across the island to my hotel.

I would find my way to Lagavulin the next day. And this was not the only Islay image that would make it onto my site…….
