I was in Florence on assignment photographing Palazzo Tornabuoni, a 15th-century structure being restored as luxury residences. While working around the building, I became fascinated with the geometry of its façade—the rhythm of the stone blocks, the symmetry of the windows, and the quiet balance between a wall-mounted light fixture and a small red street sign on a black metal post.
The scene felt complete except for one thing: a human presence.
So I set up my camera on a tripod and waited.
Before long, a young woman approached from the left, moving briskly along the sidewalk. With a slow shutter speed already selected, I released the shutter just as she passed through the frame. The motion softened her figure slightly, while the vivid red umbrella created the perfect counterpoint to the warm stone of the palazzo.
A fleeting moment of movement against centuries of stillness.
Magical.
