A Watchful Eye
If you're of a certain age—and grew up on classic rock—you might remember the song “Chestnut Mare.” It was always a favorite of mine, with lyrics that painted a vivid picture of chasing something just out of reach.
This mare wasn’t running—but she was every bit as aware.
I was photographing at 44 Farms near Cameron, Texas, working on a series of cowboy portraits and details of saddles and tack, when I noticed her standing quietly in the corral.
Watching me.
And I mean really watching me.
A Moment of Presence
There’s a particular awareness horses carry—calm, but never passive. She held her ground, ears forward, measuring the moment as carefully as I was.
We kept it to a distance—her on one side of the rail, me on the other. A quiet standoff, resolved not with movement, but with a single frame.
The natural light revealed the richness of her chestnut coat and the clean line of the white blaze, turning the portrait into something both simple and unmistakably Western.
Sometimes the subject meets you halfway.
