If you are of a certain age, and one who listened to rock music growing up, you will remember a song by The Byrds, a favorite group of mine. “Chestnut Mare” was a story song, told by Roger McGuinn, who sang “…I’m gonna catch that horse if I can…”
Well, here’s a chestnut mare for you. Also called a sorel, it has that reddish body, mane and tail. It was in the corral where we were doing cowboy portraits and closeups of custom leather saddles and tack. And at one point the animal decided to keep an eye on me. Knowing how inept I am in the saddle, it was probably sizing me up to figure out how far it could throw me given the chance.
Well, this is as close as we’ll ever get to that scenario!
