Chestnut Mare: A Western Portrait With a Watchful Eye
The Chestnut Mare
If you're of a certain age—and grew up on classic rock—you might remember a song by The Byrds called "Chestnut Mare." It was a favorite of mine. Roger McGuinn's lyrics painted such a vivid picture of pursuing that elusive horse.
A Sorel with Attitude
Well, here's my chestnut mare—or sorel, as they're sometimes called—with that signature reddish coat, mane, and tail. I was out at a ranch photographing cowboy portraits and close-ups of custom leather saddles and tack when I saw her in the corral, watching me. And I mean really watching me.
I swear, she was sizing me up.
A Battle of Wills Through the Lens
Considering my questionable skills in the saddle, I'm fairly certain she was already calculating just how far she could toss me if I tried to climb on. Thankfully, we kept it to a stare-down through the lens—which is just the way I like it.
Western Heritage in Natural Light
Captured in beautiful natural light, this image is a nod to Western heritage, a bit of humor, and the timeless presence of the American horse.
