Golden Light on the Chicago River
Golden Light on the Chicago River
A Golden Afternoon on the Chicago River
Late summer light poured into the Chicago River canyon, turning glass, steel, and water into a wash of warm reflections. The sun struck the facades along the river just as a small speedboat moved upstream toward the historic LaSalle Street Bridge, completed in 1928 on the eve of the Great Depression.
Movement Through the Urban Frame
Chicago rarely stands still.
An elevated train rattled along the Wells Street corridor, a lone bird drifted above the river, and the boat slipped quietly beneath the bridge. For a brief moment, those layers of motion aligned within the frame.
Architecture and Light in Balance
What draws me back to this photograph is the interplay of architecture and light—the mixture of historic bridges, modern towers, transit lines, and river traffic that gives Chicago its distinctive rhythm.
This was also one of my earliest digital photographs, made during an afternoon exploring the riverfront. Even now it remains one of my favorite Chicago images—an instant when light, movement, and the character of the city briefly came into balance.
