A Last Salute Along the River
Here’s one for the nostalgia buffs—a moment in Chicago’s architectural history that has quietly slipped away. Captured in 2003, this image features the iconic Chicago Sun-Times building glowing in its twilight year, just before it was demolished in 2004 to make way for what now stands as Trump Tower.
Growing up, I visited Chicago often and remember this exact view along the Chicago River. In this frame, the building’s signage is lit by the golden-hour light reflecting off the structures on the south side of the river—like a farewell spotlight on an old friend. The flags fluttering along the Michigan Avenue Bridge feel like a final salute.
History in Warm Tones
The image is a tribute to the city’s ever-changing skyline, and to a landmark now gone. There’s a warmth to the colors here—sunlight, stone, and steel—quietly commemorating a chapter that’s closed but not forgotten.
