Chicago Theatre — Chicago
This photograph captures the iconic marquee of The Chicago Theatre, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1921 as a grand movie palace, the theatre remains a defining feature of Chicago’s cultural landscape.
A Symbol in the Urban Skyline
The vertical sign has become an unofficial emblem of the city—its bold lettering instantly recognizable in films, photographs, and countless depictions of downtown Chicago. Standing beneath it, the structure feels both historic and theatrical, a reminder of the city’s long tradition of entertainment and spectacle.
A Holga Perspective
Like the other images in this small series, the photograph was made with a simple Holga camera on medium-format black-and-white film. The negative was later scanned and finished with a subtle sepia tone, echoing the vintage character of the theatre and the surrounding architecture.
The slight softness and tonal warmth produced by the Holga lend the image a nostalgic atmosphere that feels well suited to this century-old landmark.
