Cùl Mòr – Highland Majesty on Scotland’s North Coast 500
Expoloring The North Coast 500
We were deep into exploring the North Coast 500, Scotland’s iconic loop through the far northwest Highlands. That morning, we left our B&B in Lochinver and pointed the car south to tackle “The Wee Mad Road”—a narrow, serpentine path winding through ancient rock and sea views. Our hosts had encouraged the adventure (and if you’ve seen my photo titled Culnacraig, you’ll know where we ended up).
Let’s just say, they don’t call it “mad” for nothing! But with several thousand driving miles under my belt in the UK, I was up to the task.
An Unexpected View of Cùl Mòr
After lunch at a converted piping school café, we took a detour to explore more of the rugged Highland terrain. That’s when I saw it: Cùl Mòr, rising abruptly to the left—its twin summits glowing in the soft afternoon light.
I pulled over immediately. The air was still, the light was perfect, and the mountain’s form felt monumental, radiating presence across the surrounding moorland. According to Wikipedia, Cùl Mòr is the highest peak in Inverpolly and a beloved subject for hikers and landscape photographers alike.
A Moment of Light, a Memory of Place
Everything aligned in that moment—weather, timing, and instinct. I made one careful frame before we moved on, and it remains one of my favorite Highland captures. And we highly recommend exploring The North Coast 500.
