Culnacraig – Scotland’s Wild West Coast in Light and Shadow
Culnacraig – Scotland’s Wild West Coast in Light and Shadow
The Adventure Begins on “The Wee Mad Road” in Scotland
Just south of Lochinver, we set off along a stretch of road known affectionately (and accurately) as The Wee Mad Road—a narrow, winding route that tests your nerves and rewards you with unforgettable Highland vistas. Cresting a rise, we were greeted with a sweeping view of the Summer Isles, shimmering in the distance. Farther ahead, Anna Bay and Little Loch Broom came into view, their shapes etched in sea and light.
A Piping School, a Pause, and a Path Less Traveled
We paused for lunch at the Achiltibuie Piping School Cafe—a warm, rustic place filled with black-and-white piping class photos and the scent of home-cooked food. After sharing conversation with the friendly staff, we pushed southeast until the road seemed to vanish into the coastal Scotland hamlet of Culnacraig.
Light, Shadow, and the Edge of the Map
Culnacraig felt like the end of the world in the best possible way—remote, still, and steeped in the character of the Scottish coast. As clouds rolled across the sky and late afternoon light swept the distant hills in hues of slate and gold, I reached for my camera. The atmosphere was fleeting, but I managed to frame this quiet, painterly moment before we continued on—this time looping around through more forgiving roads back toward Lochinver.
This image reminds me of what I love most about Scotland: landscapes shaped by wind, weather, and wonder.
