A Longtime Friendship in Frame
OK, technically this was an assignment—but in reality, a self-assigned one. Let me explain…
Danny Everitt and I played in a band together in Austin in the early ’70s. We had a modicum of success, but when it came to an end, I returned to my first love: photography, which I’d been doing since I was 13. Danny stayed the musical course, eventually returning to it full-time. I’ve done all of his photography over the years, and about 30 years ago I started playing again just for fun. A recent project involving Danny, myself, and two other bandmates (plus a few well-known Texas musicians) is here:
A Vision Realized
This image had lived in my head for years. I discovered the scene—a weathered old homestead—while working for Bob McClaren and his 44 Farms Angus Beef operation. It was a remnant of the original settlers who arrived over 100 years ago. When Danny told me in 2016 that he had a new release titled Dream Big, I finally had the perfect opportunity to bring my vision to life. And it turned out exactly as I had imagined.
The only twist? The photo ended up as the inside spread of the CD instead of the cover. Danny’s wife overruled us—she preferred the “hot” frontal portrait we took while waiting for the sun to set. (You can see that, along with other album projects I’ve done for my musical friends, on my commercial site: hartphoto.com.)
A Personal Favorite
This image hangs in my personal office as an Ultra HD print, and is part of my 7-piece gallery installation at Jonathan’s The Rub, a Houston restaurant with a menu as memorable as its name!
