Golden Hour Sailboat


We were in Seattle after spending a few nights in the Cascades. It was right at the end of June, just before the 4th of July holiday. The weather in Seattle was perfect, and we enjoyed Pike Place Market and a tour of the Seattle Underground, a network of underground passageways and basements in the Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. These passageways were at ground level when the city was built in the mid-19th century but fell into disuse after the streets were elevated.

That particular afternoon, we took a ferry to Bremerton and back to enjoy the waters of Puget Sound and see the city skyline from the water. You can find a photo from that trip in the black-and-white gallery, “Graceful Flight.”

We returned to the Seattle dock just in time for “golden hour”—that magical time right before sunset when the atmosphere, and if you’re lucky, some dust, shifts the sun’s color temperature to a warm glow. Coupled with the slight haze over the water, contrasting the yellow of the sun with the blue of the Puget Sound, all I needed was a…

Oh, look! There it is—a sailboat with its sails backlit by the golden warmth of the sun.
