The week I spent in Maine chasing autumn color was, well, less than spectacular—at least by the usual foliage standards. The skies remained mostly overcast, and those vivid, sun-drenched colors I’d hoped for never quite materialized. But that’s the thing about photography: you work with what you have. And sometimes, what you have surprises you.
Lines, Layers, and the Beauty of Restraint
Instead of dramatic light and deep blue skies, I found something more subtle and serene. This woodland scene caught my eye with its quiet complexity. The green ferns in the foreground offered a soft base, while the background shimmered with delicate golden foliage. Two strong tree trunks rose through the center, creating an anchor of visual weight amid the airy, almost wispy branches surrounding them.
It’s usually a challenge to make sense of a busy forest composition, but here, the natural contrast of textures and tones pulled it all together. Lines, layers, and color harmony—everything I love about photographing the natural world, even when the conditions aren’t ideal.
