Grey Atlantic I — Maine Coast
Grey Atlantic I — Maine Coast
Cushing, Maine
On an overcast October afternoon along the Maine coast near Cushing, the Atlantic settled into a quiet range of tones. The sky muted the landscape, dissolving the usual autumn color and reducing the scene to its underlying structure.
Without the distraction of color, the shoreline became an arrangement of simple forms—rock, water, and sky layered together in subtle gradients of gray.
A Study in Tone
This image became the first in the Grey Atlantic sequence. Its vertical composition emphasizes the meeting of land, sea, and atmosphere—three surfaces blending into one continuous field of tone.
Made only moments before its companion image, Grey Atlantic II, the photograph reflects the quiet mood that often settles over the Maine coast when light softens and color recedes.
