I was conveniently perched atop a small ridge in my car, with a clear view over the land and the road below. The red feed station in the distance added the perfect accent of color in the upper-right of an otherwise monochromatic scene. That's when I spotted one of the cowboys leading a fully saddled horse down the road in my direction.
Capturing the Perfect Compositional Moment
I grabbed a few frames as he moved—but when he left the road and began cutting across the open grassland, I knew something special was about to happen. Just as he crossed a ditch, he hit the perfect compositional point. His head was bowed in concentration, and he was blowing into his uncovered hand to keep warm. That small, human gesture told the whole story.

I used this photograph as my Christmas card a couple of years ago—because to me, it says everything about grit, quiet resilience, and the poetry of life on the range.
