A lone pine clung to the rocky edge, shaped by years of wind and weather. Late afternoon light reflected off the surrounding stone, softly illuminating the trunk and the outcrop beneath it.
Beyond the tree, the canyon opened into layers of color and distance, with the Yellowstone River winding far below. The small tree standing just behind it only reinforced the feeling that this rugged pair had been standing watch here for a very long time.
It felt like a quiet counterpoint to the spectacle just down the trail.
