A Close Encounter
The eyes have it, as they say.
In this case, the reflection of the corral and late afternoon sky appears clearly in the eye of a Black Angus bull watching from his pen at 44 Farms near Cameron, Texas.
Standing close to a mature Angus bull is an imposing experience. Their size and strength command immediate respect, yet their gaze often carries a quiet, measured curiosity.
A Study in Presence
At first glance, the photograph feels almost monochrome. The deep black of the bull’s coat absorbs nearly all color, leaving the reflected light in the eye to reveal the surrounding world—fence rails, sky, and the warmth of late afternoon.
Using a telephoto lens allowed me to isolate that single eye while maintaining a respectful distance. The shallow depth of field softens everything else, drawing attention to the reflection and the calm intensity of the animal’s stare.
What remains is a restrained portrait—texture, light, and a moment of awareness between subject and observer.
