A Close Encounter
The eyes have it, as they say.
In this case, the reflection of the corral and the late afternoon sky appears clearly in the eye of a Black Angus bull watching me from his covered pen at 44 Farms near Cameron, Texas.
Standing close to a mature Angus bull is an imposing experience. Their massive heads and powerful build command immediate respect, yet their gaze often carries a quiet curiosity.
A Study in Presence
At first glance the photograph appears almost monochrome. The deep black of the bull’s coat absorbs nearly all color, leaving the reflected light in the eye to reveal the surrounding world—fence rails, sky, and the warm glow of late afternoon.
Using a telephoto lens allowed me to isolate that single eye while keeping a respectful distance. The shallow depth of field softens everything else, drawing attention to the reflection and the calm intensity of the animal’s stare.
What remains is a simple portrait—strength, texture, and a moment of awareness between subject and observer.
