The Eyes Have It: Close Encounter with Black Angus
The eyes have it, as they say.
In this case, the reflection of the corral and the late afternoon sun and sky in the eyes of this Black Angus bull, staring at me from the confines of his covered pen.
Intimidating Size and Powerful Presence
The sheer size of these animals, seen up close, can be very intimidating. Standing face-to-face with a mature Black Angus bull is a humbling experience—their massive heads and muscular frames command immediate respect. There's an intelligence in their gaze that's both curious and calculating, as if they're sizing you up just as much as you're studying them.
Almost Black and White, But Not Quite
While at first glance the image feels like it is in black and white, the color reflected in the eye gives it away. It's just that he is very, very black, and the sheen of his coat gives an almost tactile sense of his hide. The rich darkness of his coat creates a monochromatic canvas that makes that single eye—with its warm reflections of golden light—the undeniable focal point of the composition.
Technical Approach: Getting Close Safely
My 70-200mm lens gets us as close as needed, and enables the shallow depth of field, focused on that big eye. The telephoto compression isolates our subject beautifully while maintaining a safe distance—both for photographer and bull. The shallow depth of field ensures that massive eye remains razor-sharp while the background softly falls away.
A Window Into Wild Intelligence
This isn't just a portrait of livestock—it's a glimpse into the personality and presence of one of America's most prized cattle breeds. That reflection captures not just the physical environment around him, but somehow seems to hold the essence of ranch life itself.
