Marina Towers — Chicago
As a teenager growing up in Elkhart, Indiana, I followed the construction of Marina City with fascination. The bold twin towers rising along the Chicago River felt futuristic—symbols of a modern city and the promise of something larger just beyond the horizon.
Though life eventually took me south, those distinctive circular forms stayed fixed in my memory.
A Familiar Skyline Revisited
Years later, while visiting Chicago again on a clear summer afternoon, I found myself looking up at the towers once more. Their sculptural balconies still rise in repeating rings toward the sky, one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the city’s skyline.
Just as I framed the photograph, a plane crossed overhead, leaving a thin contrail that cut across the blue sky—an unexpected line connecting the architecture below with the open space above.
Memory and Design
For me, the photograph holds more than architectural form. It captures a moment where memory, place, and design briefly converged—an old fascination rediscovered beneath a Chicago summer sky.
