A woman carrying a bright red umbrella strides past the monumental stone façade of Palazzo Tornabuoni, her motion cutting across the symmetry of the historic Florentine architecture.

I was in Florence on assignment photographing the restoration of Palazzo Tornabuoni, a 15th-century building being transformed into luxury residences. While working around the site, I became drawn to the geometry of the façade—the rhythm of the stone blocks, the symmetry of the windows, and the quiet balance between a wall-mounted light and a small red street sign.

The composition felt complete, but it needed a human element.

I set up a tripod and waited.

Before long, a figure entered from the left, moving briskly along the sidewalk. With a slow shutter already set, I released the shutter as she passed through the frame. The slight motion blur softened her form, while the red umbrella created a vivid counterpoint to the warm tones of the stone.

A fleeting moment of movement against centuries of stillness.
