Starboard Tack – San Francisco Bay Sailing Photograph

Starboard Tack – San Francisco Bay Sailing Photograph

Interval

A Day on San Francisco Bay

This photograph was made on San Francisco Bay during the same afternoon that produced Interval and Walkin’ the Dog. Sailboats moved steadily across the water in the afternoon wind, their sails leaning hard against the dark surface of the bay in what felt like the quiet choreography of sailboat racing.

Rediscovered After Two Decades

For more than twenty years this frame remained unnoticed in my archive. When I recently revisited the image and converted it to black and white, the scene revealed a clarity I had overlooked before. The bright sail cuts sharply against the darker water and distant shoreline, giving the boat a striking sense of dimension and motion.

The Meaning Behind the Title

When I later showed the photograph to a friend who sails regularly, he immediately recognized what was happening in the frame. The boat, he explained, was sailing on a starboard tack—a fundamental sailing term describing the boat’s orientation to the wind. The title seemed to capture the moment perfectly: a brief alignment of wind, water, and motion on San Francisco Bay.
