Starboard Tack

San Francisco Bay

This black and white photograph was made on San Francisco Bay during the same afternoon that produced Interval and Walkin’ the Dog. Sailboats moved steadily across the water in the afternoon wind, their sails leaning hard against the dark surface of the bay in a quiet choreography of motion.

A single boat heels sharply in the foreground, its bright sail cutting against the darker water and distant shoreline. Beyond it, other vessels recede across the horizon, establishing scale and rhythm within the frame.

For more than two decades this image remained unnoticed in my archive. When revisited and rendered in black and white, the scene revealed a clarity I had overlooked—the alignment of wind, water, and structure resolving into a balanced composition.

The title comes from sailing terminology: a starboard tack, where the wind meets the vessel from the right side. Here, that technical moment becomes visual—an instance where motion, direction, and form briefly align.
