A Drive Through the High Plains

We were heading north from Denver to Jackson Hole, cutting through the rugged beauty of Wyoming along Highways 789 and 287—between Rawlins and Lander. Off to the west, a summer rainstorm caught my eye, backlit dramatically by the sun. That scene became another image in my gallery, titled Wyoming Rainstorm.

But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Always Look Back

As I returned to the car, I turned east—and there it was. Another vision entirely: a wide, undulating landscape beneath a sky bursting with layered clouds. The light, the texture, the mood—it all asked to be captured.

This moment is a perfect example of one of the oldest lessons in photography: always turn around. Sometimes the best image is just behind you.

A Study in Atmosphere

Where the western sky offered drama and contrast, this eastern scene was a study in harmony—soft forms, long views, and clouds stretching like brushstrokes across the high plains. And it begged to be rendered in black and white.
