Sunset Sail – Fine Art Aerial Photograph Over Galveston Bay
Commissioned Work That Became Fine Art
This was an actual assignment image, but it has worked for several additional installations. My friend Christopher Curran has a charter business for his sailboat, Adelaide, berthed in Clear Lake on the edge of Galveston Bay. I did some work for his new website, and later, we enjoyed a wonderful afternoon sail with two other couples. You’ll see another image from this shoot under “The Calm,” where you can read more about it.
An Evening Sail Turns Into Aerial Magic
This particular shot was taken near the end of our shoot, right at sunset. I was flying the drone from a dock on the shore, and we had walkie-talkie communication with Chris and his crew member. At this point, he was sailing back and forth in the bay within a fairly tight area as I covered the scene with both stills and video.
Flying the Drone Like a Camera with Wings
As a former private pilot, working with drones has been a natural progression for me, and I’m pleased to say I’ve won a couple of national awards recently for my images. Essentially, I treat the drone like any other camera, with the advantage that it can be positioned in ways that regular equipment cannot. But the principles of good photography still apply.
A Sunset Worth Waiting For
So enjoy this day’s end, captured from about 100 feet above Adelaide and Galveston Bay—sails glowing in the last light, the water catching fire with warm reflections. The serenity of the moment is something I return to often.
