A Moment of Gesture and Stillness

We had traveled to the Stuttgart area on an annual report assignment, scheduled to photograph at the Porsche factory the following day. Our host had arranged accommodations at a hotel just outside the city in Ludwigsburg, set among the serene grounds surrounding Monrepos Lake.

As we arrived that late afternoon, I caught sight of the water through the trees—soft, muted, and quietly luminous under an overcast sky. I asked my clients to go ahead without me, stepping out with my camera to explore what had drawn my eye.

At the edge of the lake, I came upon this scene: two fishermen deep in conversation, one seated, the other standing beside him. As I framed the composition, the seated man raised his hand, gesturing emphatically toward his companion. I could not hear the words, but the exchange was unmistakable—an ordinary moment, briefly elevated by light and gesture.

Color, Light, and Intent

This was still in the days of film. While I carried Kodachrome 64, I had chosen Fuji Velvia for this outing—a film known for its saturation and contrast. In this subdued light, however, it rendered the scene with restraint, holding the tones in quiet balance while allowing the blue umbrella to emerge as a single, vivid point of color.

That contrast—the stillness of the setting, the subtlety of the palette, and the clarity of the gesture—brings to mind Jay Maisel’s guiding principle: Light, Color, and Gesture. In this moment, all three aligned.
