A Return to Glengarry

Sharon and I first discovered this hidden path in 2013, when a small road sign pointed us off the A82 toward the ruins of Invergarry Castle and the Glengarry Castle Hotel. We followed a winding, single-lane road canopied by ancient branches and steeped in history. After wandering through the moss-covered remains of the castle, we ended the day with afternoon tea at the hotel—an experience so memorable we promised each other we’d return.

And in 2017, we did.

A Moment Worth Stopping For

This time we stayed overnight in a beautiful room overlooking the still waters of Loch Oich. The morning light danced on the loch’s surface, reluctant to let us go. As we slowly made our way back along that same narrow road, a towering tree at a bend compelled me to stop. Its gnarled form stood like a guardian of memory—textured, timeworn, majestic.

I placed my camera, framed the scene, and exposed the image under soft Highland light. Later, as I processed the photograph, I knew instantly it belonged in black and white. The interplay of morning light and deep shadow across the bark revealed its character more powerfully in monochrome—timeless, stoic, and deeply rooted in place.
