The Moon Watches The Ride

The Moon Watches The Ride

Seeing, as opposed to simply looking. That’s the difference.

As a former private pilot and lifelong aviation enthusiast, I’m one of those guys who immediately looks to the sky whenever I hear an airplane. Truth be told, I do it even when I don’t.

That’s what happened one early evening when I took our dog outside for a little break. Almost immediately, I became aware of the show unfolding overhead.

A vast expanse of cirrus clouds, begging to be recorded. A display that made the term mare’s tails suddenly obvious, yet more vibrant and nuanced than anything I could recall seeing before.

Thin Places

It brought to mind the idea of thin places, a concept with Celtic roots describing moments when the distance between heaven and earth seems to grow smaller. Often associated with particular places or natural boundaries, these moments can also find us almost anywhere, if we’re paying attention.

The Ride of the Valkyries

Once I brought the image into processing, the patterns, swirls, and wisps began to suggest something else: Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, that musical masterpiece you almost certainly know, even if you don’t think you do.

And then there was the little crescent moon, low in the frame but high overhead, seemingly watching the spectacle unfold beneath it. The title followed naturally.

My fascination with pattern and texture had found a willing subject. Converting the image to black and white allowed me to emphasize the intricate structure of the clouds, revealing their drama in a way that color couldn’t quite achieve.

Beyond What We See

Aristotle once wrote:

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”

Whether Valkyries or thin places, perhaps that’s what we’re looking for: something beyond what we see, something we might otherwise overlook.

I hope you see it, too.
