A Serendipitous Discovery

I was in the midst of a 7-1/2 week assignment in Europe, photographing the 14 outlet centers that McArthurGlen had at that time across multiple countries. Several nights were spent in Troyes, France—a town famous for its picturesque half-timbered houses, its position as the European capital of fashion factory outlets, and as a gateway to the Champagne region's renowned vineyards.

I stayed at a small boutique hotel the client had recommended in the heart of the historic centre, exploring the medieval streets as I walked to restaurants each evening. On the morning of my departure, I had time for one last promenade before heading back to the Paris airport. Naturally, I had my camera with me and captured some of the iconic half-timbered houses, architectural details from the cathedral, and other historic buildings.

Witness to History

I wish I could tell you exactly where this scene appeared, but we didn't have GPS-enabled cameras back then, and I was too busy to take notes. All I know is that I took only one exposure. Just one. And it sat in my image folder for years before a revisiting of personal images from the trip caused me to pause mid-scroll.

How could I have missed it all this time? A story in one frame.

A Timeless Meditation

An older gentleman, who had undoubtedly been alive during the Second World War—when Allied Forces landed at Normandy and worked their way across France and indeed all of Europe. I imagined all the history he must have witnessed. And continues to witness from his bench in the middle of town, surrounded by the vibrant colors of flowers blooming all around him.
