I came across this scene while walking through the historic center of Troyes, a town known for its medieval half-timbered buildings and quiet public squares.

An elderly man sat alone on a bench beneath a cascade of flowers, leaning gently on his cane as he watched the life of the street unfold around him. The composition revealed itself quickly—the color of the flowers, the warmth of the buildings, and the stillness of his presence.

I made a single exposure and continued on.

Years later, while revisiting photographs from that long assignment in Europe, the image stopped me. What I had overlooked at the time revealed itself as something quietly powerful—a small, everyday moment carrying a sense of time and memory.

Sometimes the photograph waits patiently until we are ready to see it.
