I made this image along the edge of Monterey Bay, working in a quiet moment as weather moved through the area. The sky was layered and unsettled, the light constantly shifting, compressing the distance between sea and horizon.

A lone figure, accompanied by a dog, moved along the waterline—small within the frame, yet essential to its structure. Their presence establishes scale, but also introduces a subtle sense of connection within an otherwise expansive, indifferent landscape.

What interested me was the balance between weight and space—the density of the clouds pressing down against the openness of the water, and the narrow strip of land where the two figures move between the two.

In black and white, the image resolves into structure and tone. The color disappears, leaving only atmosphere, scale, and the quiet tension between sky, sea, and human presence.
