Captured during a weeklong fall workshop in coastal Maine, this image is one of several that surprised me—not for the color, but for the tone. While the trip was billed as a foliage workshop, the season didn’t cooperate in the usual New England fashion. The colors were muted, the skies mostly gray—but the atmosphere was rich with quiet, filtered light. Perfect for black and white photography.
We had awakened before dawn to reach Cadillac Mountain in time for sunrise. While the view was breathtaking, it was the descent—meandering through forests and back roads—that gifted me this composition.
Stillness in Motion
Tucked among the trees, this woodland waterfall offered just enough movement to give texture and weight to the photograph. My metadata tells me it was shot at 1/16th of a second at f/32 with a 70–200mm lens—long enough to catch the blur of the water while preserving the fine details in the surrounding rocks and moss.
I only wish I’d had a GPS-enabled camera back then, as I now do. But sometimes, the magic is in not knowing exactly where a moment happened—only that it did.
